THE CHALLENGE

Built in 1983, the library had only minimal updates to maintain the facility. The library was not meeting today’s needs; accommodating a larger collection of digital media, providing increased technology resources and improved meeting spaces. The community desired lounge seating options, updated restrooms, and small group meeting spaces. Staff and owner wish list included better visibility between adult & children’s area, improved media collection and book storage and updated circulation and reference desks.

OUR SOLUTION

Relocating the circulation desk allowed space for the Marketplace, where the digital media collection is located. It also ensures good visibility of patrons entering the facility and between the adult and children’s wings, critical to the staff. The children’s wing feature wall is a colorful welcoming element and includes opportunities for reading, play and display. Lounge seating groupings were added to both the adult and children’s wings to improve the patron experience. Thoughtful space planning and right sizing the community room, allowed for the creation of two group meeting rooms.

THE RESULT

Since re-opening, the Wayne Township community has been very excited about their renovated library.  Children eagerly engage with the hex feature wall, climbing on and finding small spaces to interact with books and manipulatives.  Adults are enjoying the new lounge furnishings and private meeting spaces and updated staff areas are better supporting the work being completed by the library staff.
