THE CHALLENGE

Eskenazi Health relocated and consolidated 1200 staff and faculty members from Eskenazi and IU School of Medicine into one building adjacent to their new hospital. An open floor plan concept was desired to minimize cost, increase efficiency and encourage communication and teaming across all disciplines. This model required a new way of thinking about the workplace and how that affects culture.

THE SOLUTION

A series of culture studies, site observations and surveys were completed early to understand current culture, communication and teamwork. Town halls and work-sessions were conducted throughout the project to inform staff, provide transparency and solicit feedback. 3D floor plans and mock-up furniture scenarios facilitated conversation, excitement and ownership. Additional personal storage was added to the workstations during the design as a result of this open communication.

THE RESULT

The transparent design process ensured that staff and faculty were not surprised by their new work environment. By consolidating into one building, teams were able to communicate and collaborate both informally and formally on a daily basis in their centrally located courtyard and conference spaces.
